Beastie Boys - Rock Hard
musichistory:
Random Music History Song of the Day
“Rock Hard” (1984) was the first release by the Beastie Boys after converting from a hardcore band to a rap crew (what?!). They kept their hard edge, however, by rapping over a sample of AC/DC’s “Back in Black.” This was also the second single released under the label of Def Jam Records. The trio would record better songs than this, but Rick Rubin, the founder of Def Jam, obviously knew he had something good. The label on the 12” single (above) became the official logo for all Def Jam vinyl releases (I did not know that fact before: source).
I loathe most things AC/DC, so this just barely works for me. (Edit: On second thought, this does indeed rock hard.) The tough-guy sampling is quite charming: When we borrow your shit, you better hit the deck.
