Fancy Dancer Wicked Witch

Wicked Witch - Fancy Dancer

Oh fuck. Here’s what Egg City Radio says:

Picture a heavy serving of Chrome’s acid-drenched techno-nightmares, funneled through the P-Funk anti-matter chamber and jizzed on by Rick James during the height of a meth binge — and you’ve gotten somewhere near the sound of Wicked Witch.

What wonderful racket.

A New Chance (The Juan MacLean Remix) The Tough Alliance

The Tough Alliance - A New Chance (Juan Maclean remix)

Here’s something I wrote for Tuneage’s best of 2009 series. NEW YEAR SYNERGY:

tuneage:

A problem I have with year-end lists is that mine quickly become outdated as I spend the first couple months of the following year playing acclaimed music catch-up. Last year for instance, I ranked M83 as my favorite album but over the past year, I came to appreciate 2008 releases by Air France (thanks Tuneage!), Vampire Weekend and Crystal Castles. Some spoilsports might argue that “such is life” and that it’s futile to fix the present, but an inaccurate list is a time capsule of taste and uh, why the hell not?

Hence this song: my favorite song at the moment and my personal pick for “best remix of 2009”. Those fleeting designations will no doubt change over the next few weeks, but it’s all about the message: Any day is a new chance—a new romance. The line about “a place where diamonds never fade away” is a red herring because the only such place is the here and now. In other words, embrace the present and give the new year and decade your fiercest enthusiasm.

Tristan’s Favorites for 2009:

  • Fuck Buttons - Tarot Sport
  • Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion
  • Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca
  • Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
  • Pylon - Chomp More (reissue)

Also, I’m seeking submissions for my Tumblr-oriented “albums of the decade” poll. Submit a top-ten ballot if you’re into that sort of thing.

The End of the 00s: Everybody in His or Her Own Life Needs a Hobby → theawl.com

While everyone was busy lumping [Liars] in with Gang of Four because it was the most obvious choice, nobody really got at the pale-faced obtuseness that linked them more with Andrew’s Prison Island forebearers the Birthday Party. And really, for all the people that cite them as an influence, no one has ever really known what to make of the Birthday Party. They didn’t fit strictly into the punk or new wave or goth or no wave boxes. They named themselves after a Pinter play for a reason. That reason was to be oblique. A turgid way of being spartan and stark.

Liars share this. This weird, vaguely threatening nebulousness. It’s a sense of wonder and the unknown that is by no means wonderful. It’s alive and vital, it makes you ask questions and doubt and, hopefully, think and feel in a way you hadn’t before.

The Wake - Plastic Flowers

Glasgow’s the Wake debuted as second-rate Factory miserablists (see “On Our Honeymoon”). However, the act eventually evolved into something more refined and in tune with UK indie and quietly released a handful of modest masterpieces like 1987’s “Plastic Flowers”. (via salonika)

Rock Hard Beastie Boys

Beastie Boys - Rock Hard

musichistory:

Random Music History Song of the Day

“Rock Hard” (1984) was the first release by the Beastie Boys after converting from a hardcore band to a rap crew (what?!). They kept their hard edge, however, by rapping over a sample of AC/DC’s “Back in Black.” This was also the second single released under the label of Def Jam Records. The trio would record better songs than this, but Rick Rubin, the founder of Def Jam, obviously knew he had something good. The label on the 12” single (above) became the official logo for all Def Jam vinyl releases (I did not know that fact before: source).

I loathe most things AC/DC, so this just barely works for me. (Edit: On second thought, this does indeed rock hard.) The tough-guy sampling is quite charming: When we borrow your shit, you better hit the deck.

The Pretenders - 2000 Miles

What a bummer of a song. Pretty, yes, but it’s colder day by day….it must be Christmas time hits like a punch in the stomach. Welp, joyeux Noel!

Just so we’re clear: This poll is for the albums of the decade, not 2009. Submit your list here.

Albums of the Decade Poll

I’d like to do an albums-of-the decade-poll with readers of this blog and other Tumblr users. Just go to the submissions page and list your top ten albums. I’ll handle the math with the following conditions:

  • If you enter a top ten list, 100 points will be assigned to album #1, 90 to album #2, 80 to album #3, and so on.
  • If you enter a list with no ranking, 55 points will be assigned to each album.
  • Ties are acceptable and points assigned by the average. For example, if you only have a ranked top five plus five other favorites in no particular order, we can handle that.

I’ll close submissions in about ten days or so (12/21) and post the final list afterwards—that is, if people participate.
