Ten More Scritti Songs (1): First up is “Bibbly-O-Tek” from their second single, “4 A-Sides” (I got it muddled up with Skank Bloc in the Pitchfork review). This is, quoth the YouTube poster, “an ode to Wittgensteinian language games”, so there. It has some nice guitar on it then gets confusing.
Scritti Politti’s post-punk years aren’t my favourite part of their stuff by any means - for a long time their late 70s records were absurdly hard to hear so in the pre-web era they could be routinely overrated. There are people who absolutely ‘get’ this stuff though and are disappointed by everything that came later. For me they’re obviously full of ideas but the execution doesn’t really win me over and to be absolutely frank I don’t think I understand the ideas that well either.
Anyway “Skank Bloc Bologna” is on the best-of but the next two singles go missing, so here’s where we start!
Oh wow. I feel like this should be a lot more unlistenable/obnoxious, but that guitar makes it all hang together.
