The Clash’s “Rock the Casbah” single came out June 11, 1982. Here’s the original promo video. I have vivid memories of turning on a new-to-my-town cable channel called MTV for the first time and being confused by the armadillo.
The Clash - Lost In The Supermarket
I’ve always been amazed at The Clash’s ability to write sad rock songs that manage to be heartfelt without being sentimental. A friend once told me that “Spanish Bombs” (a recount of the Spanish Civil War) was the only song that made him cry. For me, it’s always been “Lost In The Supermarket”, a musing on identity crisis caused by a sheltered suburban upbringing. What’s even more amazing is that songs with such serious subject matter are some of the catchiest songs ever written. Thus is the power of The Clash.
A friend of mine once heard “Lost In The Supermarket” at some mallternative store. Thus is the power of The Clash.
The Clash - The Magnificent Seven (live on the Tom Synder Show in 1981)
One of the things that amuses me when I see old footage of the Clash is that Joe and Mick both kinda look like really hip versions of Jerry Seinfeld.
I love the guitar sound on this video.
